Auburn needed only five innings to claim its first state baseball championship since 2021, mercy-ruling Fort Chiswell 10-0 on Saturday at Kiwanis Field in Salem.
The Eagles (26-1), who finished the season on a 17-game winning streak, opened the game with five runs in the first inning. Jared Lavergne collected two runs and an RBI, Matthew Altizer and Landen Marrs tallied two RBIs and Zac McGlothlin added one run and one RBI for a unit that earned hits from eight different batters.
Brody Hensel scored a run and hit the championship-winning RBI single to plate the 10th run and initiate the mercy rule.
Josh Givens struck out seven on the mound, allowing three hits and four walks.
Defending champ Auburn falls in girls soccer final
Defending state champion Auburn was dethroned by West Point 4-1 in the Class 1 state title game on Saturday at Salem High School.

Auburn blanked by Eastside in softball final
The Eagles were shut down by Eastside and fell 3-0 in the Class 1 softball state championship at Moyer Sports Complex in Salem.
Auburn (22-5) tallied just three hits and gave up seven.
