HIGH SCHOOL BOYS HOOPS: Luke Ervin is new head coach at Rye Cove-- Bristol Herald Courier

Luke Ervin is the new boys basketball coach at Rye Cove High School.

The Gate City graduate was the 2013 VHSL Group A state player of the year after leading the Blue Devils to a state runner-up finish.

He will carry on a family legacy.

Luke’s grandfather, John Vicars, coached the Blue Devils from 1964-1983, while his father, Greg Ervin, also had a successful stint as Gate City’s head basketball coach.

His younger brother, Zac Ervin, was a star at Gate City and later played at Elon University.

Luke Ervin replaces Aaron Williams, who resigned the position just a couple of weeks after being officially hired in May.

It continued a busy offseason of basketball coaching moves in Southwest Virginia.
