ROCKY MOUNT — The town council approved its budget for the 2026 fiscal year Monday, which will include an increase in the cost of some services for residents.
Council members unanimously approved a 6% increase to monthly water and wastewater rates. A $2 residential and $4 commercial rate increase for solid waste collection was also approved.
There was no discussion before Monday’s unanimous vote by the Rocky Mount Town Council. The town council in previous years has asked that the cost of services for residents be increased to assure they covered the town’s costs to provide those services.
No residents spoke at a public hearing held for the proposed budget on May 5.
According to Vincent Copenhaver, Rocky Mount’s finance director, most utility customers in town pay an average of $55.43 per month for water, wastewater and solid waste collection services. With the approval last night, those rates would increase by $4.49 to $59.92 for the approximate cost of an average customer.
There were no tax increases for town residents included in the 2026 fiscal year budget.
