The Walmart Effect: Taking Our Money and Giving Nothing Back
Y’all ever notice how Walmart ain’t just a store—it’s a whole way of life? Except this way of life seems to bulldoze everything else in its path. Not only has Walmart dominated the retail sector, but it’s also run a whole mess of local businesses straight into the ground. Remember when you could buy boots at Bob’s Hardware or a dress for the church social at Sue’s Boutique? Now it’s one-stop shopping for everything, and not a lick of it feels local.
And here’s the kicker: you ain’t never seen a Walmart logo on the back of a little league jersey, have you? Nope. Walmart doesn’t sponsor your nephew’s baseball team or the local Christmas parade. But bless their hearts, they’ll sure take your money and run it right outta town.
What makes it worse—take Lee County or Buchanan County, for instance (and I’m sure a few other SWVA counties are guilty too)—our own elected officials used our tax dollars to help subsidize building Walmart right here in our backyard. That’s right, they reached into our pockets to help bring in a big-box store that undercuts local businesses and doesn’t even sponsor a single cakewalk at the county fair.
So next time you’re standin’ in a long line at Walmart, just remember: not only did they take away the mom-and-pop shops that cared about this community, they’re takin’ your tax dollars too. Meanwhile, your local politicians are patting themselves on the back like they did us a favor. If that ain’t a slap in the face, I don’t know what is.

Just another example of our RICH politicians taking care of RICH corporate America using our tax dollars to do it!
