Mountain Mayhem event returns to Southern Gap--Bristol Herald Courier

GRUNDY, Va. — The fourth annual Southern Gap Mountain Mayhem events get underway on Thursday July 24.

Mud bog blitzes, drag races, hill climb racing, a Barbie Jeep race, a UTV tug-of-war, games, music and more are all part of the action attendees will find at Southern Gap Outdoor Adventure near Grundy, according to a written statement.

Activities are scheduled to continue through Saturday evening.

“Southern Gap Mountain Mayhem is designed to be fun for a diverse crowd, including those who consider themselves to be adrenaline junkies, to those who are weekend warriors, to those who are just looking to be a part of the festival-like atmosphere to cheer on their favorite drivers and riders,” said Billie Campbell, one of the owners of SGOA.

Last year, thousands of visitors from 12 states converged on Southern Gap to take part in Mountain Mayhem 2024.

“Last year, in addition to many regional visitors, we also welcomed our off-road families from other parts of Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Iowa and as far away as Maine,” Campbell said.

Music at this year’s event will include crowd-pleaser Midlife Crisis, of Hazard, Kentucky, back for their fourth year performing 1980s rock on Friday night. Midlife Crisis has shared the stage with several major national acts including Ace Frehley, The Outlaws, Molly Hatchet and Black Stone Cherry.

Victor Lawson & Boogie Chillen will open for Midlife Crisis with their high energy blues, rock-n-roll and funk sounds. At the request of past Mayhem attendees and fans, rock-n-roll bingo will again be offered two nights this year — on both Thursday and Saturday nights. Music trivia, laughs and prizes will be a part of both nights which are hosted by DeeJay JP the Great.

Maxxis Tires returns as both a sponsor and a vendor for this year’s event. Additional sponsors include Buchanan County Tourism, the Town of Grundy, Noah Horn Well Drilling and Spearhead Trails.

Additional event sponsors include Boys and Girls Club of Central Appalachia, CNX Foundation, Chillerz, Food City, Heart of Appalachia, YPK Motorsports, SWVA Mining and Southern Gap Outdoor Adventure. Trailnecks serves as media partner. Virginia Tourism Corporation serves as a marketing partner.
