GATE CITY – Two students face charges after a May 1 bomb scare at the Gate City Middle/High School complex.

Scott County Sheriff Jeff Edds, Sr. said Tuesday that juvenile petitions were filed against two middle school students in the wake of Thursday’s incident.

School system officials said Thursday that both schools were evacuated for more than three hours after graffiti was discovered on a women’s restroom wall near the schools’ cafeteria. The graffiti mentioned a bomb and violence against the school.

A search of the schools and parking lot by local, Tennessee and Virginia State Police officers and dogs found no evidence of explosives, county School Superintendent John Ferguson said Thursday. Students and staff were interviewed by police after the incident.

Classes resumed later Thursday – the first day of state Standards of Learning testing – after the search.
